What is Hardcore / Hard Techno?

Fast and punishing. Distorted, clipping kick drums that carry the whole track, screaming synth stabs, and tempos well past what a normal club plays. Aggression is the aesthetic.

Anchors rather than an exhaustive canon — if your track sits near these, this is probably the right label.

Usual tempo 145–180 BPM. Sitting outside that range does not disqualify a track; it just makes the tells matter more.

Easy to confuse with

The nearest neighbours in Electronic, by tempo. If Hardcore / Hard Techno does not quite fit, one of these usually does.

  • IDM / Experimental80–170 BPM

"Intelligent Dance Music" — electronic music made for headphones rather than dancefloors. Irregular, intricately programmed drums, odd time feels, unusual synthesis, and structures that refuse to repeat predictably.

  • Future Bass130–160 BPM

Bright, emotional, candy-coloured. Detuned "wobbling" chord stabs that bend in pitch, pitched-up vocal chops, trap-influenced drums with rattling hi-hats. Sounds hopeful and a bit nostalgic.

  • Jungle160–175 BPM

Drum & bass's rawer ancestor. Frenetic, heavily chopped and time-stretched breakbeats (usually the "Amen break"), reggae and dancehall basslines and vocal samples, and a rougher, more organic feel than modern DnB.

  • Trap (Electronic)140–160 BPM

Hip-hop trap drums repurposed for festivals. Booming 808 sub kicks, rattling triplet and stuttering hi-hat rolls, and a big synth or vocal drop. Distinct from rap trap in that it is instrumental and drop-focused.
